Qualification Overview

The Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training is suitable for you if you want to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector and gain employment as a personal trainer. It is particularly suitable if you want to work as personal trainer in a self-employed environment and build your own business. It will provide you with the knowledge and skills to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes and personal training sessions to a range of clients.

The qualification has been designed for:

  • Gym instructors wishing to work and/or seek employment in the health and fitness sector as a personal trainer where they can also apply the additional skills and knowledge they will have achieved
  • Individuals who already hold a gym instructor qualification, wishing to become self-employed running their own personal training business
  • Individuals already working in the health and fitness sector wishing to enhance their career progression opportunities

Entry Requirements

You must hold a Level 2 qualification in Fitness Instructing (Gym). There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved, and you should have basic skills in communication. The qualification requires physical exertion and your participation is essential, so it’s important you are physically fit.

Professional Body Accreditation

The qualification provides entry to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 3. Launched in 2002, the REPs are an independent, public register which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health enhancing exercise instructors in the UK. The REPs provides a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industries agreed National Occupational Standards. Through gaining the relevant, credible qualifications, REPs membership provides assurance and confidence to employers, consumers, and health care professionals that all REPs registered exercise professionals have the knowledge, competence and skills to perform specific roles.
